PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Regardless of your level of expertise or your academic major, there is a band at the University of Georgia for you! See below for requirements for bands that best suit your interests and abilities.

Concert Ensembles

Prospective students who are interested in joining one of the UGA Bands’ six concert ensembles must first be admitted to the university. Personnel for the Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band (all of which meet in both Fall and Spring Semesters) are determined through the “A” audition. This audition takes place at the beginning of each semester. The “B” audition determines membership in Concert Winds, which meets only in the Spring Semester.

In addition, all university students regardless of major who are proficient on a wind or percussion instrument are welcome to register for and participate in Concert Band or University Band. For notification of upcoming concert ensemble auditions, please subscribe to our news feed or visit our website four to six weeks before the beginning of each semester.

Redcoat Band Wind Auditions

Redcoat Band participation is open to any admitted UGA student who has successfully auditioned into membership. Students may audition before they have received their official UGA acceptance. Those who major or minor in Music undergo different audition procedures.

Music Majors or Minors

Anyone auditioning and accepted as a Music major or minor for the Hugh Hodgson School of Music on a wind instrument is automatically accepted for membership in the Redcoat Band if they wish to participate. Email Dr. Robinson at mcrob@uga.edu before May 11 to let him know of your interest. A separate Redcoat Band audition is not necessary for wind instrumentalists who are accepted as Music major or minor.

If you wish to audition for the Hugh Hodgson School of Music as a Music major or minor, please click here for school admission requirements and and audition information.

Non-Music Majors

It is NOT necessary to be a Music major or minor to be a Redcoat! Nearly 70% of Redcoat Band members major in a field other than Music. Wind instrumentalists should simply apply, have your director send us a recommendation letter, then audition for a Band faculty member on one of two Saturday audition dates in the spring. For more information about auditioning for a wind position in Redcoats as a non-Music Major click here! See below for percussion and auxiliary audition information.

Redcoat Band Percussion Auditions

Membership in the UGA Drumline (which includes battery and front ensemble) is determined by audition in the spring semester. If you are interested in auditioning for the 2013 Drumline, please download the audition information and audition exercises. Those who wish to audition for the Front Ensemble should download the Pit Exercises

The 2013 audition dates are as follows:

Saturday, March 23rd – INDIVIDUAL AUDITIONS AND REHEARSAL EVALUATION # 1

9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Individual Auditions –

Auditions will take place in the Leebern Band Room located in the School of Music. ALL potential UGA Drumline members must have an individual audition EXCEPT for returning members wishing to play the same instrument as last season. You may audition on your instrument of choice. However, it is important to note that these auditions are for placement within the ensemble as a whole—not one specific instrument. At the conclusion of the individual audition, each potential member will be informed of the instrument he/she will begin on for the initial “rehearsal evaluation.”

2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Rehearsal Evaluation #1 –

Rehearsal Evaluations are a continuation of the audition process but in an ensemble setting. This setting allows the staff to evaluate a student’s ability to perform cleanly and accurately with others as well as directly compare individuals side-by-side. There are a total of four Rehearsal Evaluations. During these rehearsals, decisions are made regarding specific placement within the marching percussion ensemble. At any moment during the rehearsal evaluations, potential members may be asked to move to continue the audition process on a different instrument within the marching percussion ensemble. Unfortunately, not all potential members will earn a spot on their instrument of choice or in the ensemble as a whole. At the conclusion of Rehearsal Evaluation # 4, the ensemble’s personnel will be finalized.

Saturday, March 30 – REHEARSAL EVALUATION # 2
4:00 – 6:30p.m.

Sunday, April 14th – REHEARSAL EVALUATION # 3
4:00 – 6:30p.m.

Sunday, April 28th – REHEARSAL EVALUATION # 4
4:00 – 6:30p.m.
